My thoughts- hoooraaaayyyyyyyy

Well, what an experience...

I started well, but then work got the better of me and I had a huge gap in doing any '23 things' until literally last night when I blitzed it...

I have thoroughly enjoyed doing this, i have learnt more than ever imagined I would- and I am still surprised at all the Web 2.0 stuff out there that I had no idea about before... (I just hope I can remember all of my log ins and passwords :)_)

I know that i will definitely be using some (quite a few) of these tools in both work to try and make life a bit easier, but also home life- just for fun, such as Flick r and Picnik...

One thing I had heard of was Pod casting, but I had no idea that you could subscribe to them so that you never miss an episode or installment- great, you also get alerts to say that there is now something new to listen too! I used to stumble across these things by luck

Twitter was fun for about a day... I found lots of people that I knew (but I couldn't find them through Twitter), I sent out a message on Face Book telling every one my user name and that they could go find me!! But it got a bit over whelming... I can kind of see how some people get hooked... and I am sure every now and again, I might log in and see what is going on

One problem i thought i was going to have, was the fact I had to do this in my own time... I soon started doing bits and bobs just when the football was on in our house and it actually made 'football nights' a bit more bearable!! What will I do now...

One big thing I guess is that a few months ago, if someone had asked me about Web 2.0 technologies, I would have guessed at Facebook and Twitter- but wouldn't have had a clue about all the others (which I am sure are not all that is out there!).

I have also got quite into blogging. I am not sure about people who just keep a blog about... 'their life', but certainly in this situation- it has been great having other blogs to read as we all share the same experiences. I have also got better at blogging, and even though there might be no one out there reading this- i seem to be happy now just merrily chatting away to nothing!

My favourite bit has been Picnik... I loved that bit and wish we could have hung around with that area for a while longer. I will (when time allows) have a look at the other editing sites suggested- pixer and fotoflexer... I do hope though- that the blogs and the 'things' stay on line for some time, as it would be good to spend more time on a few other things, and generally just going back at getting the opportunity to relive some applications- and also to catch up on a few more blogs.

My worst experience has been with Delicious- I am still not entirely sure what all of the hype is about- but I think I got there in the end...

Thanks you so much 23 things team... I have enjoyed every minute!!

Is this really the end :(

Argghhhh, not the dreaded Delicious again!! Well I suppose this is my opportunity to give it a second chance.

I have just added 'Mydel.icio.us' and couldnt believe how quickly it actually linked into my account just by me typing in my user name... in fact it was instant!

I am bit more comfortable with Delicious now that I can see it from iGoogle as it was getting to the point where there was so much useful information, but too many places to go to get it!! It is good when you can keep up to date with things going on, but try to aim to look in as few a places as possible!

Looked at the Editors pick and selected the 'to do'... wow- iGoogle is now going to organise my life, keep me updated on any changes... will it soon do my job for me!

Take a look...

Flickr Photostream

Some how I managed to get ahead of myself with this one, as I have had the Flickr photostream on my blog all along!!

I must have got gadgetted away with myself one day...

As I have already achieved 'thing 21' I will put a pretty picture on my blog for you all to look at instead...

Cake

Heres the cake... I thought I would share it with my followers... hang on, no one is following me. Is there anybody out there !!

Think free

Well I had never heard of Think Free but think that I will be using this in the future. I created a new document which seemed easy enough, and then I downloaded an existing document which is now there.

It did seem very slow as I did this 'thing' at work and dont think it like the Internet Explorer (or something!)

I have now also created a new letter- please see... I have sent to my blog but not yet found out where it has gone or why the picture has dissappeared!! I will return and seek out more info

For future use, I think it will be a useful application to remember exists. I will shortly being doing some short presentations in lots of different locations- so if I put my presentation onto Think Free it will save any hassle of carrying (or more likely forgetting), my memory stick etc

Google Docs

Have never heard of Google Docs, and was not sure of its uses, but having just emailed the start of a questionnaire to the 23 things organisers so quickly- I am starting to realise the potential.

As I work in HR, it is always useful to hear what people think, and i think that Google Docs would be an easy and quick way to gather information from a large source and variety of people...

I was also keen to see what else Google Docs can do- I liked the formatting of the questionnaire... I had a nice picnic background by the end!!

It was also good to be able to create a slide show... and even more useful to be able to then save this in to Power Point.

Another 'thing' learnt that will definitely be put into practice in the work/ play environment...

Wikipedia

Wikipedia, love it.

I use it just out of interest sometimes, to wiki a place. I recently looked on wikipedia for a place where we were going to stay for a weekend to identify how many pubs/bars/restaurant's there were!! I have also used it to look up a film that had been on one evening, but I had dropped off and missed the end... it gave me a really good overview of the plot!

I didn't realise though until now that you could edit pages!! kool

At least now, instead of shouting at the screen when you see something spelt wrong, or if there is info missed etc- I can contribute to what must be the biggest encyclopedia in the world...

I had also never noticed discussions before- and this is something that I think I might take more notice off when I pop into Wikipedia to look something up... just to see what other peoples perspective is!

Wiki

My first and so far only experience of Wiki, is Wikipedia which I use all the time... to find out what a word means, to learn about a place or even to find out the plot of a film (to read what happened at the end of a film that I had fallen asleep through!!).

I did register with the C&RD wet paint when it first came out but must admit, I see the weekly email that comes round- but rarely really understand what it is trying to show or tell me!

Having looked at the 'socialouls' page, I couldnt believe how many web 2.0 technologies some of the Bodleian libraries are using! some of them, i had not even heard of (maybe this will come when we get to do '23 things- the sequel!!')

I didnt edit any thing- and just wonder- how would people see my contributions if I had... what if there was no body out there- my thoughts would disappear in to a wiki black hole. Do they automatically go to people who have registered with the wiki, or do they just sit there, ready and waiting...

Think I would get a lot more out of Wiki's in the future- to read about other Bodleian libraries and catch up with what they are up too...

Twitter Twoooo

I have found even more people to follow. I have retweeted someones tweet... and I have hash tagged ox23 with my update!!

It was good to follow the ox23 tweets- glad to see I'm not the only one leaving this to the last minute!

Tweet Tweet!!

Have registered with Twitter and have even tweeted!!

I have found a couple of people to follow...

Found it quite nosy - which is why I liked it :)

LinkedIn

I have registered with LinkIn and I have even managed to find a contact from linking my LinkedIn account with my Hotmail account. I think I need a little more convincing of the value of this application, expecially with only one contact so far. I am sure though, once i have had chance to play around with it a little more, it will be interesting to find a few more HR people and maybe make some new HR friends to share experiences with!!

How libraries are using Facebook

Well, as a regular user of Facebook- i probably have a quick glance every day, I think that Facebook is an excellent tool for libraries to utilise to stay connected with readers/ users etc, and also to keep them updated with useful info: new publications, revised opening times etc etc.

With FB, as soon as you log in you are faced with all the updates from your friends or pages that you are a fan off. As a library, you could therefore use your status updates to keep anyone that uses your libraries up to date with anything going on...

It is also a good way to invite people to things and let people know of events that are coming up.

It is also a useful forum for discussing and questioning things- so I am guessing that a library could utilise this facility by creating some sort of community on their page.

You Tube & Google

I have managed to link my You Tube account up to my Google account... so this is yet another feature that I will continue using as I am assuming that I will see my video history from my Google page...

You Tube,,,

I have used You Tube before, in fact I am use it regularly. as we often go to gigs, and mostly the support acts are random unknowns- we sue You Tube to listen and see whether or not the support bands are actually any good. this means we know whether to rush to see bands to catch the support act or whether we just turn up to see the main band.

It is also good fun after a show, to see how many people have posted videos from the actual gig- so you can essentially relive it!!

You Tube is also good for demo's as you have suggested in the instructions- we used it not long ago- when my boyfriend changed the break pads on his car- and something electrical happened!! It took him through a step by step demo of how to sort it out- and is more helpful than any book as you can actually see somebody doing it.

Back to the 'thing' in question... I found a music video that I wanted to see, and clicked on the user who uploaded it- and found lots of music videos by the same artist at the same concert which was good.

I had a quick look at YouTube Edu and found lots of lectures.. I am sure one day I will use this facility properly and go and actually listen to one- I might actually learn something!

bit confused

I printed off a few things to do at home as I struggle to follow the instructions off the screen. think i might have got a bit ahead of myself at this point as the print out of my thing 11 is You Tube!! Anyway, think I think I am back on track- PODCASTS!!

Very pleased to learn about the RSS feed linking to Podcasts to ensure that you get notified every time there is a new podcast to listen to!! I will definitely continue to use this, even once I have finished 23 things- which means i will continue to use Google Reader- I have surprised myself!!

I have managed to subscribe to the Chris Moyles podcasts on my Google Reader-

I have really enjoyed thing 11, as I had no idea that you could subscribe to podcasts- and I also had no idea that you could link it up to Google Reader. this now means that I will continue to use google reader after i have finished 23 things... again- pleasantly surprised!

Whoop whoop

Slowly starting to get the hang of this blog thing. I have even managed to set up my labels onto the side bar of my blog!! Half way there and two days to go... I have committed to doing 'intensive 23 things!!'

Delicious again... Noooooo

Right, lets see if I can get it this time!!

I have another little look at Delicious and have found some friends: Sibel and Anna- HELLO IF YOU ARE OUT THERE!

Following the instructions- and the first thing asks me to 'take a look at the Delicious page of one of the libraries listed in the web 2.0 directory' Have I missed something quite significant... or have I simply forgotten something from earlier on- due to having had a very long gap since last doing any 23 things! Anyway, I had a go at searching for some Bodleian libraries±!

I have found a few libraries on Delicious, but not sure if I have gone the right way about it!

Anyway, now onto adding someone to my network. I went into Network, and add people, and it gave me the option to search by user name. I am a bit lost again, how would you ever know what someones user name was- this has made it impossible- but i am going to go back and have another go... using the ox23 thingy

I am still looking. One thing I have just discovered is the ease of keeping my blog when I have a million tabs open on my Explorer. I am currently flicking between my blog, the 23things home page for my instructions (I now sound like a robot!), and Delicious ... and I realise that it has become much much easier to keep my blog as I attempt every little thing. Probably not good for you guys though as I waffle on...

Luckily, I guessed that Aurelia who came up at the top of the list when i explored ox23 was Anna- I have finally managed to add someone to my network... I have even saved one of Anna's book marks as i thought it looked quite interesting. Am I finally getting the point. we'll see.

Wow... sorry Anna for using you as my guinui pig!! but since you are the only person in my network- I now have an RSS feed set up against your bookmarks. :)
to
I am sure with a little more time and patience, I will one day log back into Delicious to explore what the big deal is- and I am confident that I will one day understand :)

Delicious... NOT!

Well, I was going great guns to start with, but as you can probably work out, I ground to a halt quite dramatically!!

In fact, since PICNIK which I really really enjoyed, I havent done anything. Work has got a bit carried away with itself and I cant quite believe how quickly time has flown by (it always felt like I had forever to catch up with my 23 things!).

I had a go at Delicious last weekend, at that hasnt helped the situation. I didnt really get it!! I did however save my 5 favourite website, and added a couple of tags- but I think I am seriously missing the point as I still dont really understand the purpose of Delicious.

I saved my blog here but dont get how anyone else would find me here...

until i realised why we were ask to tag our blog ox23- get this bit now... but still not sure about other tags... unless there was a really specific term, would it not bring up 1000's of webpages

Can anyone help???? Anyway, as I havent looked at it for a week or so- I might bravely venture back on to the site and have a play around to see whats what!
